British Karate Kyokushinkai — Crawley Dojo

Crawley Dojo of the British Karate Kyokushinkai (B.K.K.) was established in 1969, making it one of the longest-running martial arts clubs in the area. Over more than five decades, the dojo has developed a strong reputation and continues to provide regular training in Kyokushin karate.

The dojo is supported by a team of experienced and highly regarded instructors. The Chief Instructor is Shihan David Pickthall, 7th Dan, who also serves as President of the International Federation of Kyokushin (IFK). He is assisted by Shihan Neil Madeley, 5th Dan. All dojo instructors have undergone the required DBS checks and hold the necessary licences with both the British Karate Kyokushinkai and the IFK Kyokushin organisation.

Training at the dojo is open to people with different levels of experience — from established martial artists to those discovering karate for the first time. Kyokushin training provides an opportunity to develop physical fitness, coordination, endurance and mental resilience. For younger students, regular martial arts practice can also help develop discipline, respect, confidence and the ability to focus and manage their energy in a positive way.

The dojo's website provides information about training sessions, the history of the club and various aspects of Kyokushin karate. Visitors and members are welcome to explore the available information, provide feedback and contact the dojo for further details. Those interested in training are also welcome to visit the dojo during one of the regular practice sessions.

History

Crawley Dojo was founded in 1969 by John Jenkins and Peter James. The first training sessions were held at Montefiore Hall in Three Bridges. In 1973, the club moved to Crawley Sports Centre, before finding a permanent home two years later at Tilgate Recreation Centre.

The dojo has remained at Tilgate Recreation Centre ever since. In 1990, the club leased Hut 25, which was subsequently renovated and progressively transformed into the dedicated martial arts facility it is today. The venue now provides a fully matted and properly equipped environment for Kyokushin training.

For much of the dojo's history, the club had the privilege of being led by Hanshi Steve Arneil, founder of the International Federation of Karate and former Chief Instructor of the B.K.K. His experience and contribution played an important role in the development of the dojo and its students.

In July 2008, Hanshi Steve Arneil stepped down from his responsibilities as Chief Instructor of the dojo. The decision was made due to his considerable commitments as head of the International Federation of Karate, together with the extensive international travel associated with his work.
