Karate Do Obwalden – Kyokushin Karate in Obwalden

Karate Do Obwalden is one of the established Kyokushin Karate clubs in Switzerland and has a long history. Its roots go back to the second half of the 1960s, when Herbert Wechsler founded the “Karateschule Giswil” in the air-raid shelter of the Hotel Krone in Giswil.

In 1975, training moved to the Türli Sports Hall in Sachseln, and the dojo was renamed “Karate Dojo Obwalden”. In 1981, Klaus Ming took over the leadership. As the dojo continued to grow, it was transformed into the “Karateklub Obwalden” association in 1991. In 1996, the club joined IFK Switzerland. After many years of cooperation, it left the organisation on 9 March 2023 following a decision of the General Assembly.

Today, around 150 members train in Kyokushin Karate at several locations in Obwalden and Nidwalden. Training is offered in Sarnen, Sachseln, Giswil and Hergiswil, catering to karate practitioners of different ages and experience levels.

Members of Karate Do Obwalden regularly participate in national and international competitions and have achieved numerous successes. Several karate practitioners also represent the club as members of the WKB Switzerland national team.

Training and grading examinations follow the syllabus of the World Kyokushin Budokai (WKB). Shihan Klaus Ming serves as a Branch Chief within the World Organisation, while Sensei Eveline Wallimann is a member of the Referee Committee.

Karate Do Obwalden represents traditional Kyokushin Karate, athletic development, discipline and an active martial arts community in Central Switzerland.
